Smith Metal Fabrications has been based in Newhaven, East Sussex, specialising in the sheet metal welding and fabricating industry since it was formed by four brothers in 1974 as a sub-contract business and has remained a family-run business ever since, and is now celebrating its 30th anniversary.

In the early days, SMF concentrated on fabricating and welding of steel frames, furnaces and fire escapes. Over time, the company developed purchasing new machinery allowing SMF to expand more into sheet metal work, bespoke projects and prototyping in stainless steel, mild steel and aluminium products such as stainless steel enclosures, handrails and shop-fittings. In 1990, a large medical equipment contract was obtained allowing Smith Metal Fabrications and AEP Precision Engineering, a local sub-contract machine shop to form an alliance.
